Gifting Difficulties

I’m sure I’m not the only one wracking my brains over the perfect Father’s day gift every year.. It’s one of those situations that I realize he’s got everything and there’s nothing I can give to add value.. If I am alone in these thoughts? .. Please enlighten me!. WHAT DO YOU give for father’s day!! ? 😀 This year there is HOPE…because I had this IDEA and I am psyched to share this awesome father’s day apron tutorial with you guys. A few years back when I went through a phase of sewing galore I happened to create a super cute little boys apron.. A couple of weeks ago looking back at all my crafts I decided to recreate this IDEA just on a bigger scale. In other words for my hubby for Father’s day which seemed like an awesome idea. 😀

anyways.. enough rambling. lol let’s make this manly man apron.  😀

Before I get ahead of myself.. Here’s the free printable I promised. Isn’t it so stinking cute !!?

Pattern (no overthinking)

For those of you overthinking this part. NO need.  It is as simple as a yard stick and tissue paper. I did the hard part for you and drew out all the measurements. All you need to do is connect the dots. 😀 😀  (for the waist and neck straps scroll down for directions)

What You’ll Need

You can use any fabric you would like, but here’s a list of what I used. 😀

• 1 yard (denim )
• 1 1/4 yard (Canvas Pinstripe Fabric)
• 1/4 yard (brown faux leather– vinyl)
• spray adhesive
• navy thread
• ribbon
• scissors
• Printable (tools)
• tissue paper (to make the pattern)
• cheap tape
• Iron
• yard stick
• pen (anything that will show on the vinyl will work.. I used a green gel pen. 😀 )

Pattern Insight..

To make the pattern I used tissue paper that I taped and used a yard stick to draw out the pattern. Out of the tissue paper you will need to make the base of the apron and the pockets.  Before cutting any fabric hold it up to yourself or in my case I sized it to my husband since he was around to make sure it wasn’t to big or small. I also marked where the pockets would look best. This pattern is about a medium-large size. To give you an example my hubby is a size medium and wears 32×32 pants.. Hope this helps with sizing concerns.

This is what my pattern looked like.

And this is what my printable looked like.

I pinned the pattern to the fabric and snipped away (do the same with the pockets) . 😀 I used my pretty aqua gel pen to trace my tools.. I did this on the back side. Then carefully cut all the shapes out. Straps in the Making

For the waist and neck straps. I cut four 2.5″ by 28″ strips out of the denim.

This is where the ribbon comes into play. To make the straps you will need to sew the ribbon on one of the ends and leave it inside.

Like this.. You will ONLY secure the ribbon on the end.. DO NOT stitch it along the length of the strap.

Once done you should see the end of the ribbon sticking out like so..

Then simply start pulling the ribbon out.. like this..

There you have it. Now cut off the ribbon and iron out the strap.

For the base of the apron iron all the edges in twice.. So turn in once 1/2″ iron through.. Then once more..

Pocket Talk

For the pockets you will be folding the edges in 1/2″ once all around and ironing except for the top of the pocket where you will need to double it like the base of the apron was done.

Then only stitch through the top of the pockets leaving the sides and bottoms simply ironed in (not stitched)

Then lay your tissue paper pattern on top and mark where the pockets should be.. (remember I mentioned while I was sizing the pattern to my husband I marked approximately where the pockets should be )

Pin the pocket’s to the apron and stitch through.

The pretty details

Fold your apron in half and mark or iron to find the center.. (for the tools to be centered)

Then measure 2.5′ away from the top of the apron and draw a straight line.

I would recommend doing this outside because of the over-spray.. Then use a light coat of spray adhesive on the backside of the tools.

I applied them to the apron. Stitch each tool to the apron and attached the waist and neck straps securing with double stitching on the straps. 😀 That’s it. 😀 😀
