I spy Oranges

I love oranges or anything with citrus.. I kid you not I will literally use anything that has citrus…lemon scentsy’s, shower scrub, perfume, smoothies. lol If it has citrus and exists I most likely am a big fan and If I’m not then I probably haven’t tried it yet.  If you’re a big citrus fan like me then you will love this Orange Marmalade Lip Salve.

This lip salve wasn’t a win from first my attempt. It has required countless hours and testing at least 20 different methods/recipes (lost count) before one finally blended well, smelled good, and worked like a charm . 😉

Benefits

My goodness oranges have more benefits then I thought they did!! I think everyone knows oranges are a natural source of Vitamin C but, did you know orange essential oil promotes collagen production, slows the rate of skin damage caused by the sun, fights bacteria, balances hormones, and is uplifting and calming … WOW and that’s just to name a few.  You can learn more about orange essential oil here.

You Might wanna Know the Story behind it to AVOID the same MISTAKES

Honey isn’t ALWAYS Sweet…

Before we jump into this detailed tutorial I wanted to mention.  Honey and Petroleum jelly do not blend well. It’s like mixing water and oil and expecting them not to separate. hehe 😀

So after about 15 attempts this honey started growing bitter on me. lol 😀 But, I knew I needed to use honey because it was the perfect consistency and would be a great sweetener for my lip salve.

Light Bulb

The first thing that came to mind was.. “what could I substitute honey with?” , and I thought maybe syrup or molasses.. but, the problem with those is they stink . Not exactly lip balm material.  🙁   So back to honey I went and as I was attempting my 16th 😀 time or so.. I remembered how my mom used to make us a cough syrup while growing up with honey and butter and guess what it blended nicely.  There you have it!! The story behind the inspiration and birth of this oh so tasty and soothing lip salve.

What you’ll need  (this will make around 2 oz)

  • 1/4 tsp coconut oil
  • 2 tsp petroleum Jelly (or Vaseline)
  • 1/2 an orange (for syrup)
  • 2 drops Vitamin E oil
  • 6 Drops Orange Essential Oil
  • 1 tsp honey

To Make the Syrup

You’ll need to squeeze 4 teaspoons out of your orange and place the juice  in a small pot.

Then add 1/2 teaspoon small bits of orange peel (optional)

Following that add 1 teaspoon honey  ( I used raw alaskan honey) 😀

IMPORTANT TIP !!

You will need to cook the mixture to create your syrup.  If you overcook your syrup it will turn into a sugaring paste which will not mix into the petroleum jelly correctly. In other words you will have chunks of syrup in your lip salve.

To avoid that follow these easy steps and tips :
  • Make sure your heat is set on medium.
  • Stir consistently ( I cooked mine for about 2 1/2 minutes) Keep in mind yours could be sooner or later depending on the pot your using and your stove top.
  • You’ll know it’s done as soon as you see a slight difference in the liquid’s consistency. All we’re trying to do is bond the two liquids together. I’ve also noticed that when tasted before cooking it’s slightly sweet but once it’s cooked into syrup you’ll notice the sweetness is more concentrated and you’ll have less liquid in your pot as well.  Keep in mind it’s not supposed to be super thick.. (because then it’s a sugar paste)

Here’s a snippet of my syrup all done and ready to go into my lip salve.

Time to blend

Next you’ll need 2 teaspoons of Petroleum Jelly.

DIY Lip balm

I used little plastic measuring spoons that worked perfect for this DIY. Add 1/2 teaspoon of the syrup to your petroleum jelly. It’s ok if you still have some syrup left over. I wouldn’t recommend adding all of it because it’ll make the lip salve to runny.

Then just mix together with a spoon. 😀 Look how smoothly it mixed in. 😀 LOVE IT.!!! ( mix the syrup with the vaseline first then mix in the rest of the ingredients)

Next add 1/4 teaspoon coconut oil.

DIY Lip balm

Two drops of Vitamin E oil.

DIY Lip balm

6 drops of orange Essential Oil and mix it all again.  (please be cautious some essential oils are intended only for aromatherapy)

All that’s left to do is package it neatly into your little container and that’s it. 😀
